Funboards or Fun shapes should be used by beginners or intermediates, these are boards that are very similar to a longboard but slightly smaller, its wide shape and higher volume make it easier for paddling and catching waves, the ideal conditions is surf that breaks rather softly, fast and hollow waves are not very suitable for this kind of equipment.
Longboards are often used by beginners but many advanced ride them regularly as well. Longboarding can be practiced by surfers of all levels but because of the great stability and good paddling these boards offer, many people start surfing on one of these fine pieces of equipment. Perfect for those days when the surf is less than great.
Shortboards are mostly used for advanced and intermediate surfers with at least a couple of years of experience, these boards have less volume requiring an extra effort to catch waves so they are recommended only for intermediate and advanced. They are ideal for doing fast turns and other progressive maneuvres.
Bodyboards are usually used by beginners to start off riding waves before moving on to a surfboard. This is only because it is safer to ride a bodyboard on your first sessions than jumping straight on to fiber glass surfboard.
