The main season for surf in the Mazatlan area is in the summer when southern hemisphere swells really light up this part of the coast producing some of the longest waves in Mexico, mostly lefts. Things change in the winter and the surf gets smaller providing great conditions for beginners with mostly soft breaking waves. However there are still plenty of fun waves for intermediate and advanced. West swells make right points and beachbreaks break in this time of the year, particularly north of the city.

The main beach for surfing from december to april is Playa bruja (cerritos) located aproximately 15 minutes north of town. It's mostly a beachbreak but can break like a right point on large west swells or north west windswells, it's one of the funnest and most consistent waves in the area, suitable for surfers of all levels. NE wind is offshore here. It can get a little crowded on the weekends but only a few people surf it during weekdays. As spring kicks in Playa bruja will start getting much larger surf and often will not have any shape which is when you have to look at other place like valentino's in the golden zone or make the drive north.

Your average shortboard will work fine here on good days and you will probably want to ride a fish on the smaller days. For beginners a funboard or longboard will do.
